Why Some Buyers Regret Moving to the Texas Hill Country

• By Chris Pesek

The Texas Hill Country can be an incredible place to live, but it is not a fit for everybody. The buyers who regret moving here usually do not regret the house they bought. They discover that the day-to-day lifestyle is different from the version they experienced during a weekend visit.

The first reality is summer. Central Texas heat is serious. Austin recorded 29 days at or above 90 degrees in July 2026 alone, and temperatures reached 104 degrees at Austin-Bergstrom. Growth is another factor. Hays County, which includes much of the Dripping Springs and Wimberley area, grew from about 157,000 residents in 2010 to more than 241,000 in 2020 and is now estimated above 304,000. That growth means more traffic and development.

Distance also matters. Living outside Dripping Springs, Johnson City, Blanco, Fredericksburg, or Kerrville may mean planning grocery trips, restaurant visits, airport runs, and medical appointments instead of making them spontaneously. Healthcare is improving across the region, including substantial hospital and specialty services in Marble Falls, but availability varies significantly by location.

The takeaway is simple: visit in summer, drive the routes you will actually use, and experience the area like a resident before buying.
