Texas vs. Florida: Which State Really Costs Less to Live In?

• By Chris Pesek

Texas and Florida both sell the same headline: no state income tax. But that does not mean your total cost of living will be lower in both places. Right now, Florida generally comes in higher on housing and insurance, while Texas usually hits harder on property taxes. So if you are comparing the two, the real question is not taxes, it is your full monthly burn rate.

That is where a lot of relocation buyers get this wrong. A lower tax bill can get wiped out fast by a higher purchase price, steeper insurance, flood exposure, HOA costs, or rising fees. In broad statewide terms, Texas has been more affordable on home price, while Florida has been more expensive to insure and more exposed to hurricane-driven volatility. Sources worth checking include Texas REALTORS®, Florida Realtors, MIT Living Wage Calculator, Texas Department of Insurance, and the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation.

From what I see, Texas tends to fit buyers who want more room, a broader job base, and more flexibility by region. Florida can still make sense, especially if beach lifestyle is the priority, but it is usually not the cheaper choice once you run the full numbers. Before you move, compare insurance, taxes, flood risk, commute, and long-term resale, not just income tax.
