Moving to Austin Texas: What Life Is Really Like Before You Relocate

December 18, 2025

If you are considering a move to Austin or the surrounding Hill Country, you are not alone. People relocate here for jobs, lifestyle, and long term quality of life, but Austin is not a one size fits all city. Where you live matters just as much as deciding to move here in the first place.

Austin summers are hot, full stop. Triple digit temperatures are common from June through early September. The tradeoff is that fall, winter, and spring are mild and highly livable. Most days sit comfortably between the 60s and 80s, with only occasional cold snaps or ice events. Spring brings storms, and fall is one of the best outdoor seasons anywhere in Texas.

Outdoor access is one of Austin’s biggest advantages. Lady Bird Lake runs through the heart of the city and supports kayaking, paddleboarding, and trails. West of town, the Texas Hill Country offers hiking, rivers, and iconic spots like Hamilton Pool and Enchanted Rock. Music and food round out the lifestyle. Austin is packed with live venues, major festivals like ACL and SXSW, and a food scene that goes far beyond barbecue if you know where to look.

Suburbs are where lifestyle really diverges. Dripping Springs and Wimberley attract buyers looking for space, scenery, and strong schools. Georgetown and Taylor appeal to those on the north side, especially with continued tech and manufacturing growth. Kyle, Buda, and Bastrop offer relative affordability and commuter access. The biggest mistake newcomers make is choosing based on reputation instead of daily lifestyle fit.

Austin is not cheap, but it is still more affordable than coastal tech hubs. Home prices are higher than national averages, while utilities and gas tend to be lower. Property taxes are meaningful and must be planned for, especially for buyers coming from income tax states. The job market remains strong, led by tech, healthcare, manufacturing, and creative industries.

Traffic has increased, but compared to major metros it is still manageable, especially if you choose the right suburb or work location. Most people will need a car, and commute planning should be part of your relocation strategy.

If you are deciding whether Austin or Central Texas fits your lifestyle, the smartest move is understanding neighborhoods before houses.
