Living in Georgetown Texas: What to Know Before You Move

December 19, 2025

If you are considering a move to the Austin area but want something with more character and breathing room, Georgetown consistently rises to the top of the list. Located northeast of Austin, Georgetown blends historic charm, strong community identity, and modern amenities in a way few suburbs manage to pull off.

One of the biggest draws is the downtown square. Often called the prettiest square in Texas, it anchors the city with historic buildings, local restaurants, shops, and regular events. It feels active without feeling overwhelming, and many residents spend weekends downtown rather than driving into Austin. Southwestern University adds energy to the area, along with a surprisingly strong arts scene that includes live theater, festivals, and public art.

Outdoor access is another advantage. Georgetown has dozens of parks and miles of trails, with San Gabriel Park and Blue Hole Park standing out as everyday gathering spots. These are not destination parks you visit once a year. They are part of daily life for walking, biking, and family time. Community involvement runs deep here, with market days, car shows, and local wineries bringing residents together throughout the year.

That popularity comes with tradeoffs. Home prices tend to run higher than nearby suburbs like Taylor or Bastrop, and traffic has increased as the city grows. Infrastructure is catching up, but growing pains are real. Utilities and internet have improved, though rapid expansion still strains systems during severe weather.

Georgetown works best for buyers who want community, walkability, and charm without giving up access to Austin.
